How Many of The 5 Key Areas of Weight Loss Does Slimfy Cover?

This product aims to increase the metabolism and fat burning to help with weight loss. Furthermore, the third product in the program also attempts to suppress the appetite, thus helping users to stick to diets better and aid weight loss. It does not seem to have an effect on fat or carbohydrate blocking.

Slimfy Ingredients

Green Coffee Bean Extract

Green coffee bean extract is a very popular ingredient in weight loss products. This is due to it containing caffeine which is a very well known stimulant and has good evidence to suggest that it may help with weight loss. Unlike normal coffee however, green coffee beans have not undergone the roasting process and therefore still contain a chemical called chlorogenic acid which can also help weight loss. The chlorogenic acid can act as a good anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agents as well as being able to promote weight loss, in addition to the caffeine contained in the coffee beans.

African Mango Extract

Also known as Irvingia gabonensis, African mango is a small fruit found in West Africa. Some studies have indicated it as being able to help diabetes and aid gastrointestinal activity as well as being a good antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Furthermore it may be useful as an anti-obesity agent. In areas where it is native, it is often eaten, however it is the seeds that supposedly have the weight loss effect. There is some evidence supporting its use, however it is not very strong. However it does contain soluble fibre which may be able to suppress the appetite and promote weight loss.

Raspberry Ketones

This ingredient is an aromatic chemical found in raspberries and other berries which is part of what gives them their characteristic flavour and aroma. It is one of the most popular weight loss ingredients around, with many products built around this chemical. It is most often made synthetically now instead of being extracted directly from the fruit due to the high cost. There is some debate about its effectiveness however some animal studies have suggested it can increase weight loss in rats, although there has yet to be a large scale human clinical trial.

Green Tea Extract

Taking green tea as part of a diet or health plan has long been a popular option as it has several health benefits. Extracts are also commonly used in weight loss products. Many of the supposed health benefits come from the high catechin content. Catechins are chemicals which can act as antioxidants to help prevent cellular damage and may help fight the onset of disease. In addition, green tea also contains some caffeine which can also increase the metabolism to promote weight loss. Finally, green tea also contains a phytochemical called epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) which may also be able to promote lipid metabolism.

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10 for short is a vitamin like chemical required by the body for many enzymes to function properly. It is made by the body but can also be taken in supplement form, and can be found from natural sources such as liver, kidney, beef, mackerel and peanuts.

As it is needed by all cells for proper function, it is thought that by taking it as a supplement and ensuring the body has an adequate supply, there can be efficient metabolism within cells and more effective energy production, although the evidence behind this is not conclusive.

Caralluma Fimbriata

Caralluma fimbriata is a cactus that is native to Africa, the Canary Islands, some parts of Asia and Southern Europe. It has been used by tribes traditionally as an appetite suppressant, where t would be chewed during periods between meals. It it still used today in some Asian countries where it is made into jams and chutneys. Extracts from this plant is also used in various forms in weight loss products. It has also been used to help quench thirst and possibly improve endurance, which is why it was used for so long by tribes between hunts.

How Slimfy Works

Fat Burning / Binding

Fat burning is where the fat stored in adipose tissue throughout the body is broken down and utilised for energy production. It most often occurs through changing the levels of specific hormone release into the blood to promote the utilisation of fat instead of sugar for energy, therefore also promoting weight loss.

The first ingredient in Slimfy that claims to target fat burning is african mango. African mango extract seems to be a very popular weight loss agent, and has some evidence to support this. As with many nutritional supplements, the mechanism of action is somewhat unknown. However, it seems that it acts through increasing the release of a hormone called adiponectin. This protein is released by solely fat cells, or adipocytes, and plays a role in various metabolic processes and acts on other cells to increase fatty acid oxidation amongst other effects, thus helping increase the breakdown of fat to release energy for the cells to use.

Raspberry ketones are a very popular ingredient in weight loss product, and it seems that it is able to increase fat burning. It can cause adipocyte to show accelerated fat oxidation and breakdown. This is thought to occur through acting in a manner alike to caffeine, where it causes increased noradrenaline induced stimulation of adipocytes, causing increased lipolysis. In addition, raspberry ketones have shown to be able to increase the synthesis of adiponectin from fat cells. This hormone acts on other cells and promotes utilisation of fat stores for energy release.

Green coffee beans, as well as containing caffeine which can increase metabolism, can also lead to reduced fat production. This can therefore help promote breakdown of existing stores, thus helping weight loss. Evidence suggests that this occurs by the green coffee beans downregulating expression of certain genes involved in fat production. As well as helping weight loss, this mechanism may also be useful for maintaining weight once it has been lost. The caffeine in the coffee may also contribute to increased lipolysis as part of the metabolism boost it can have on cells.

Appetite Suppression

Appetite suppression is the process by which a substance aims to decrease the onset of hunger or prevent cravings for food. It can occur by adding bulk to meals, thereby physically creating a feeling of fullness or by modulating hormone release to prevent the cues that cause the onset of hunger cravings to happen.

Caralluma fimbriata seems to be able to effectively suppress the appetite, however there are several supposed ways that it may do this. One may be by controlling the levels of the hormone ghrelin that is released. It does this by acting on the ghrelin producing cells and downregulating the synthesis of the peptide. Ghrelin is produced by the gastrointestinal tract and acts on cells in the hypothalamus to start to trigger the onset of hunger. Therefore by preventing the release of this hormone it should be able to stave off the onset of hunger.

Metabolism Boosting

Metabolism is an umbrella term referring to all the chemical reactions within the body which sustain life. It is commonly used to refer to the rate at which energy is utilised from stores throughout the body. Increasing metabolism can mean that instead of energy in food being stored as fat, increasing resting energy expenditure, thus promoting weight loss.

Although this ingredient may be able to prevent weight gain through decreasing fat production, green coffee beans also contain caffeine. Caffeine is a well known stimulant and can trigger the release of catecholamine hormones such as noradrenaline. This chemical gets the body into a state of readiness, and contributes to the so called ‘fight-or-flight reflex. Here energy stores are used, and the activity of cells increases as they start to use more energy. This effect contributes to the stimulation caused by caffeine containing products as the body gets ready for action.

CoQ10 is known to be important for enzymes to function properly, and taking more of it in the diet has been suggested to be able to increase the metabolism. A study, which is discussed in the clinical trial section showed that it can increase fat oxidation and lead to greater signaling via the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is an unconscious and automatic part of the nervous system, that controls many processes, including the rate at which cells metabolise via hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenaline, amongst others. So by increasing this signaling, metabolism may also increase.

Green tea is one of the most popular ways to increase the metabolism. One way this can happen is due to the high concentration of catechins and other antioxidants. Antioxidants are thought to be able to prevent cellular damage and allow metabolism to occur efficiently. Green tea also contains caffeine, which is able to increase release of noradrenaline. Sometimes called norepinephrine, this chemical can act on various receptors throughout the body and can cause cells to utilise energy stores such as glycogen and increase their activity, and therefore their metabolism.

Slimfy Clinical Studies

There does not seem to be any clinical studies on the product as a whole, however the ingredients have papers published on them. Most of them support the claims of the ingredients suggesting they may be effective, however they amounts used in this product may vary and in some cases the benefits were only small. Furthermore, although some studies support the use of the ingredients, some such as the African mango have had low quality data published and so may not be totally reliable, as the review shown below mentions.

What Is A Clinical Study?

A clinical study is carried out to further understand the properties of a substance, most often before it goes onto widespread use as part of the research process. They are carried out ideally on humans, but also sometimes on animals. Human studies use placebo controlled trials, to remove the chance of the placebo effect and to keep the test controlled. Results are published in papers in journals, which are widely considered the most accurate and reliable source of information due to the high standards studies should be carried out to and the controlled environment they are carried out in.

Clinical Studies on Green Coffee Bean Extract

This study looked to find if how green coffee beans can help with weight loss. By using decaffeinated coffee, the study looked to see if the weight loss benefits occurred through a mechanism independent of caffeine. It was a rodent study, and mice were divided into different groups, each fed diets containing different amounts of fat and varying amounts of green coffee bean extract, as well as a control. There was shown to be downregulation of genes involved in fat production in those given green coffee bean extract, suggesting that in this case, green coffee bean may be effective at helping to prevent fat gain.

This next study looked at 16 overweight adults over a 22 week study. It used a commercial green coffee extract and aimed to study the safety of the ingredient, as well as whether it can help with weight loss. Subjects were given either a placebo, a high or low dose of green coffee extract. With no change to diet over the study, there was shown to be decreases in body weight and BMI as well as body fat percentage. The study concluded that these results agreed with other data, and suggested that green coffee extract may be a good natural product to help with weight loss.

Clinical Studies on African Mango Extract

This study looked at all the available data previously published and compiled it into one overall paper. It looked at all papers published with no exclusions to give a fair judgement. It showed that there was reductions in body weight and waist circumference compared to the placebo in several studies and also showed decreased blood lipid levels. However, it did say that some of the methods used were of low quality. It also mentioned that there was some side effects such as headache. It concluded that although there was some supporting evidence, there is not enough good quality data to promote the use of this product for weight loss.

Here, an extract of African Mango was studied, to further some previous work which suggested that it may be able to affect fat production. It looked at 102 overweight volunteers where were given either 150 mg of the extract or a placebo, twice a day. There was shown to be decreased body weight and fat, as well as decreased waist circumference and blood lipid levels. This study showed that African mango can act as a good weight loss aid and may be a good product for combating obesity.

Clinical Studies on Raspberry Ketones

This study aimed to show if raspberry ketones can help improve lipid metabolism and prevent obesity in rodents. The study lasted for 16 weeks, where mice were given a high fat diet and given raspberry ketones. Raspberry ketones were shown to help prevent the increase in body weight and visceral fat tissue which occur with high fat diets. In addition the study showed that raspberry ketones were able to increase lipolysis induced by noradrenaline. It showed that raspberry ketones were able to help prevent obesity and fatty liver in rats.

This study looked at the effects of giving raspberry ketones to cells in culture, to elucidate a mechanism for the supposed health benefits of the chemical. From an intermediate dose of raspberry ketones, there was increase lipolysis in the cells, as well as increased secretion of the hormone adiponectin which can promote fat breakdown. There was also suppressed accumulation of fat in the cells. This study therefore not only gives some evidence supporting raspberry ketones as a weight loss aid, but also gives some insight into how it may work.

Clinical Studies on Green Tea Extract

This study on green tea aimed to see if it could affect fat oxidation and prevent obesity. Experiments were carried out where healthy men performed a VO2max test, and the effect of green tea supplementation measured; and a glucose tolerance test with a green tea supplement or a placebo. Fat oxidation levels were greater in those given the green tea, with a greater amount of energy utilized from the fat. There was also an improved insulin response to the glucose test in those given the green tea compared to the placebo. This data supports claims that green tea may be able to help with weight loss and improve fat burning.

This study looked at male and females who after followed a 12 trial, where they were given either a placebo or a green tea extract rich in the catechins. There was no change to exercise regime or diet from normal throughout the study. Results showed that there was greater decreases in body weight, waist circumference, visceral fat in those given the green tea supplement compared to the placebo. Furthermore there was a larger reduction in LDL cholesterol in the experimental group. In addition there was not shown to be any adverse effect associated with the supplementation. Therefore, it seems that by this study green tea can be a good supplement for weight loss .

Caralluma Fimbriata

This study followed fifty overweight subjects who were given either a 1g dose of caralluma fimbriata per day or a placebo and were advised on dietary habits and physical activity. There was a statistically significant decrease in waist circumference and hunger in those given the supplement compared to the placebo. There was also a decrease in body weight, body mass and hip circumference in the experimental group compared to the placebo, however this was not statistically significant, so a definite conclusion cannot be drawn, however it does seem that this product may have some weight loss ability.

In this study 43 adults with a BMI over 25 kg/m2 or waist circumference over 94 cm for men or 80cm for women were included. The study lasted for 12 weeks and subjects were divided into an experimental group who were given 1g caralluma fimbriata a day, or a placebo group. Thirty-three subjects completed the trial. There was shown to be greater decrease in waist circumference and improved waist to hip ratio in the experimental group compared to the placebo. Importantly, there was also a greater decrease in body weight and BMI in the experimental group compared to the placebo, suggesting this ingredient may be a good weight loss ingredient.

Clinical Studies on CoQ10

There is a lack of evidence supporting claims of CoQ10, however this one paper does study it further. This study was carried out with a double-blind design, and 11 healthy volunteers exercised on a bike and various parameters measured, such as their heart rate via and ECG and gas exchange values. There did not show to be any significant change in heart rate between the placebo or the CoQ10 either at rest or during exercise. There was also no change in autonomic nervous system activity during rest between the two groups; however this did increase in the CoQ10 group during exercise. The study also showed there was increased fat oxidation in the CoQ10 group compared to placebo. This study therefore suggests that CoQ10 may be able to promote fat breakdown through the action of the autonomic nervous system.

Slimfy Side Effects

The manufacturers do not mention any side effects associated with this product on their website, and the ingredients seem generally free from serious effects. However, if users decide to use the detox product as well as the main weight loss product, there may be some side effects associated with it such as flatulence or increased bowel movements, as one may expect. However, overall there seems to be little incidence of side effets occuring with this product and customer reviews do not mention experiences of adverse reactions to this product. However, some of the ingredients do have some potential side effects individually.

Side effects associated with Green Coffee Bean Extract

This ingredient seems safe for use, with little incidence of side effects occurring with normal use, and few reports of side effects in the literature. However coffee beans do contain caffeine and therefore may lead to related side effects. These include jitteriness, heart palpitation, increased blood pressure and trouble sleeping if taken later in the afternoon. Some people also experience digestive upset when taking caffeine as it may have a slight laxative effect. These effects may be more noticeable in some individuals who are more susceptible to caffeine, and most users are unlikely to experience anything other than mild effects.

Side effects associated with Green Tea Extract

Green tea is considered safe for the majority of users at normal doses, however there are some potential adverse effects associated with it, particularly when taken in higher doses. As it contains caffeine, there may be some nausea or headache, digestive upset as well as possible heart palpitations or trouble sleeping. Less commonly, green tea has been associated with increased calcium excretion which could lead to weakened bones. Green tea could also worsen anxiety disorders or anemia. There is some indications that green tea could worsen glaucoma for short periods of time.

Side effects associated with African Mango

This ingredient is considered safe, and there does not seem to be any serious side effects associated with its use. This has been shown in a review published that showed it appeared safe to use. However, there may be some mild adverse effects with its use. These are mostly gastrointestinal, as there may be some flatulence or bloating with it. There have been some reports that users have had trouble sleeping when using it however this seems uncommon. It should be safe for use during pregnancy, however there is not enough evidence to prove it is safe for sure for use during pregnancy.

Side effects associated with CoQ10

CoQ10 is considered to be safe for general use, however there are some side effects associated with its use. These can include stomach upset, diarrhoea and vomiting. There can also be allergic reactions such as a skin rash, or itching. Furthermore, it can potentially lower blood pressure, and so may be more of a problem in those with low blood pressure or diagnosed with hypotension. This effect on blood means that it should not be used in the two weeks leading up to surgery. Finally, there is not enough evidence to say if it is safe for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding so it may be wise to avoid use during this time.

Side effects associated with Raspberry Ketones

As raspberry ketones have yet to be studied in details in humans, there is little clinical data to confirm the side effects. However, as it has a similar structure to a stimulant called synephrine, it may lead to some side effects associated with side stimulants. These may include shaking, heart palpitations, increased blood pressure or some anxiety. There could also be some trouble sleeping. It seems that on the whole however, raspberry ketones should be mostly safe, and unless users have a preexisting condition such as high blood pressure or heart condition then it is unlikely to cause serious side effects.

How To Use Slimfy

Slimfy is designed to be used in three phases. First the detox product is recommended to be used to prepare the body for weight loss. Next, the first weight loss product is used to help users to lose weight, and after this course the final product should be taken to help some extra weight be lost and to maintain the weight loss. The manufacturers says using the three products will prevent the body becoming tolerant to it. The website also says to take each tablet twice a day, around 30 minutes before a meal with a glass of water.

Groups Of People Who Shouldn’t Take

  • Those with allergies to any of the ingredients
  • Those under the age of 18
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

Consult Your Doctor If

  • You notice signs of allergic reactions
  • Before taking if you are on prescription medications as they may be affected
  • You have a preexisting medical condition such as a heart condition or liver or kidney disorders

Who Makes Slimfy

This product is owned and sold by Slimfy. Their contact page on the website lists them 1451 W. Cypress Creek Rd, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33309, United States; however searching for this address brings up no mention of the company and it seems this must just be a rented office space.

Their website also gives a telephone number: 855-575-4639, open 9am – 5pm, however there is no mention for contact details for customers outside the US. There is also no email address shown.

Their website seems professional at first glance, however there is very little information about the company, and the contact page seems to have a stock image, with some vague information about their mission. Also this information has many spelling errors, which suggests it was not properly thought out, which is strange for a company trying to sell a quality and scientific image of themselves.

They also show a research page, however there is no mention of their own research and some of the papers they link to are irrelevant, such as one on guarana and another on chill, neither of which are used in this product.

Slimfy do offer a money back guarantee, and even offer to pay for another weight loss product if it does not work for you. Initially this seems a good deal, although they do require you to have completed the full six month program as well as providing before and after photos of your body. This seems unreasonable for users to plan out to do this just in case and seems like they are making it difficult to carry out this offer. In the terms and condition page, it also mentions that if customers do not cancel their order within 2 months of their first order (of a 3 month supply) then they will be charged monthly for further orders. This is not made clear and it seems that there is a good chance customers may get charged without knowing; a strategy often used by less reputable companies.

There is little to no customer reports of this company, with few comments about them. It seems that there are some comments on yahoo answers, however when these are read it is clear that they are written by employees of the Slimfy group as they all praise it and give links to the company. In addition there are some youtube videos around which also appear to review the product, but actually are simply promoting it further. This suggests that the company is controlling what is said about the product and there doesn’t seem to be much reliable customer feedback about the product or the company.

Where To Buy Slimfy

This product is not available to buy rom high street shops, nor other supplement stores online. It seems that the only place to buy it is from the official website. It can be found on the US version of Amazon, but not the UK version. From this one can assume it is sold mainly in the US and not widely available to the UK. Despite this it seems that the main place to order from would be the official website. It may occasionally appear on eBay, however this is not the best place to buy from as you cannot be sure of the quality if the seller is not a licensed retailer of the product.

This is the official website of the product, and therefore is the main place to buy from. However users should be aware of any subsequent charges and an auto-billing scheme appears to be in place.

  • Stage 1 Detox and Weight Loss: $87.30 (£55.21)
  • Stage 2 Enhanced Weight Loss: $87.30 (£55.21)
  • Stage 3 Weight Loss Maintenance: $87.30 (£55.21)

Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer and sells many health products. Slimfy can only be found in the US version of the site. Also the stage 2 product was not available at the time of writing.

  • Slimfy Stage 1: $97.00 (£61.35)
  • Slimfy Stage 3: $97.00 (£61.35)

Overall Verdict

This product seems like it may be effective as the ingredients used have some good evidence to support their effectiveness. Furthermore there are few incidences of side effects. However there is no mention of the amounts of each ingredient used, and two tablets a day may not be enough to give a noticeable effect. The product is also expensive, and seeing as there is an auto-billing scheme in place where customers are signed up for subsequent orders if not cancelled, more charges may be incurred. Overall Slimfy may be able to give some weight loss, but may not be as effective as other more reputable products using similar ingredients but which are more open about payments and are less expensive.

Before being sucked into their \"Free Trial\" BEWARE - This is a SCAM. Pure and Simple. The product does not work. It preys on people who are desperate. They will take your bank details when you sign up for the \"Free Trial\" I signed up and the next day had $112 taken out of my account. I complained and was told it was for Stage 2. I complained saying that I did not sign up for Stage 2, but was happy to pay the $49 if I kept the second bottle. This month they debited $126 from my account. I got an email that it was shipped. I had no warning like they claimed. I am unable to get a refund because I was told that it was in the terms and conditions. Auto shipping will ensure you get debited forever unless you close your bank account. Complaining and saying you do not want their product does not work. DO NOT GET INVOLVED.

They charged me for the shipping fee. I cancelled the product before it is delivered since I have learned their way of fooling people. Until now, they never returned my money. They pretend the bank is liable for that. They never show any kind of proof that they procesed the refund.

Yes, this is a SCAM. Only I am having payments debited from my account after complaining that I never signed up for them. I only agreed to pay if I kept the second bottle of the "FREE TRIAL". They are SCAMMERS and please avoid at all costs. Worst of the worst.
